In addition to the monthly rental payments, the partner camps within OLARE MOTOROGI CONSERVANCY donate $5 per guest per night to The Maa Trust, an independent non-profit organisation that works towards ensuring the success of conservation through sustainable community development in the Maasai Mara ecosystem. They work in partnership with the Conservancy and our neighbouring communities to improve the lives of Maasai families in an environmentally sustainable way.
The Maa Trust works to increase the benefits of wildlife and conservation to Maasai families so that they appreciate, and contribute to the protection of, wild animals on their land, and their aim is to unite communities by involving them in conservation at a management level.
The Maa Trust have a wide range of projects, including schools, honey production, conservation education, beadwork, water and sanitation, health clinics and bursary programs.
Unlike many organisations working in remote areas of Kenya, The Maa Trust are a permanent presence on the ground in the Maasai Mara and directly oversee all of their projects. While they strongly encourage communities to take ownership of projects upon completion, they continually monitor their work, and are on hand should advice or guidance with repairs or maintenance issues be needed.
The Maa Trust empowers local people by promoting small business startups & micro finance schemes, enabling them to make their own money and to invest in their family’s development.
